The Handover Day — What Happens When Your Pool Is Finished
Wahoo Pool & Landscape ConstructionHandover day is the bit clients have been waiting weeks for. The pool is full, the equipment is humming, the site is clean. So what actually happens when we hand it over?
Here's exactly how it goes — usually about 90 minutes, start to finish.
The walkthrough
Travis (our water chemistry and handover specialist) meets you on site, usually mid-morning. We walk the whole pool zone together. Things we cover:
- The interior finish — what's normal, what would not be normal in the first month
- The coping and paving — small details on care and what to expect as it weathers
- The fence — confirming the certifier sign-off and where the certificate is filed
- The skimmer box and inlets — how they work, when to check them
This part is mostly visual. We're showing you the pool the same way we'd show our own family.
The equipment shed
Then we move to the pump and filter setup. Travis runs through:
- The Zodiac variable-speed pump — speeds and timer settings
- The cartridge filter — when and how to clean it
- The salt chlorinator — checking salt levels, when to clean the cell
- The LED light controller — colour modes, on/off, timer
- Where to turn the system off in an emergency
If you're not technical, don't worry. Travis explains it in plain English and you'll get written guides too.
The water chemistry brief
This is the bit that catches first-time pool owners off guard. There's a quick learning curve.
Travis covers:
- The starting chemistry of your pool (he'll have already balanced it)
- How often to test (we recommend weekly in summer, fortnightly in winter)
- What to do if levels drift
- Why salt pools are easier than chlorine pools but still need monitoring
- What chemicals you'll need on hand
You leave with a small starter chemical kit included as part of handover. Enough to get you through the first month while you find your rhythm.
The paperwork
Travis hands over a folder with:
- The 10-year structural warranty
- Equipment warranties (Zodiac, fence, lights — all manufacturer-backed)
- Building approval and certifier paperwork
- Engineer's structural certificate
- Pool fence compliance certificate (CPR sign required by law — already installed)
- Equipment user manuals
- Care guide — first 30 days
- Care guide — ongoing
The folder is yours to keep. We also keep a copy in our office in case you ever lose it.
The first swim
This is the bit clients ask about. Yes, you can swim in the pool the day of handover. The water has been balanced for at least 24 hours by the time we hand over, and the pebble-crete has cured.
Some clients celebrate with a swim before Travis has even finished the walkthrough. We don't mind.
The 30-day callback
One last thing. About 30 days after handover, Travis or one of the team rings you to check in. How's the chemistry going? Any equipment questions? Anything not making sense?
This isn't a sales call. It's part of the build, and it's how we head off the small problems before they become bigger ones. Free, scheduled at handover, no obligation either way.
What happens if something goes wrong later
You ring us. The number's in the warranty pack. For the first 30 days, you can ring Travis directly. Beyond that, the office line.
We've had clients ring us about pumps in year 7 and pebble-crete questions in year 12. We answer the same way we did the day after handover.
If you're starting to think about a build and want to talk about what happens at the end of one, give us a call.
— Travis
