Brisbane Pool Maintenance — The Realistic Weekly Checklist
Travis DillonBrisbane's climate is great for pool owners, but it's also slightly intense on the maintenance side. Summer heat drives chemistry harder, summer storms drop debris and dilute the water, and the long swim season means more user load.
Here's the realistic monthly checklist for a Brisbane backyard pool, broken down by season. It takes most owners 15-20 minutes a week once they've got the rhythm.
Every week (or fortnightly in winter)
- Test pH, free chlorine, alkalinity — 5 minutes with a test kit or test strips
- Empty skimmer basket — 30 seconds
- Empty pump basket — 1 minute
- Run robotic cleaner OR vacuum manually — 30-45 minutes if manual, hands-off if robotic
- Brush walls and steps — 10 minutes
- Visual check of equipment shed for leaks or unusual noise — 30 seconds
Every month
- Clean the cartridge filter (hose down outside) — 15 minutes
- Check salt level on the chlorinator display — 30 seconds
- Inspect the salt cell for calcium buildup — visual, 1 minute
- Test total alkalinity and stabiliser (cyanuric acid) levels — 5 minutes
- Top up water level if needed — hose, 15-30 minutes
Every quarter
- Deep clean salt cell (5-10% acid wash if needed) — 30 minutes
- Check pump and motor mounting bolts
- Inspect pool light gaskets visible from outside
- Clean and lubricate pool gate hinges
- Inspect fence panels and gate for any movement or damage
Twice a year
- Full water test at a pool shop (free at most Brisbane pool stores) for calcium hardness, metals, phosphate
- Clean coping and surrounds with appropriate cleaner
- Inspect skimmer for cracks or damage
- Service the variable-speed pump (free for warranty period)
Once a year
- Major filter clean — remove cartridge, soak in degreaser, reinstall
- Inspect and replace any sun-degraded equipment connections
- Full safety check of fence (compliance review)
- Renew Pool Safety Certificate every 2 years (so half of years)
Seasonal adjustments
Brisbane summer (Nov-Mar). Chemistry runs hot. UV breaks down chlorine faster. Test weekly minimum. Run pump longer (8-10 hours daily). Watch for storm dilution — a big rain event can throw everything off.
Brisbane shoulders (Apr-May, Sept-Oct). Easier mode. Test fortnightly is usually enough. Pump 4-6 hours daily.
Brisbane winter (Jun-Aug). Easiest. Test every 2 weeks. Pump 2-4 hours daily. Water chemistry stable but check for algae if pool sits unused for weeks.
The 15-minute weekly routine
Most owners we know land on a Saturday-morning rhythm. Coffee in hand, walk out to the pool, test, brush, empty baskets, done. The whole thing is 15-20 minutes.
If that sounds like too much, professional pool services in Brisbane run $30-$50 per visit for weekly maintenance. Many owners use one occasionally (e.g. monthly) and DIY the rest.
When to call us instead of doing it yourself
Most things you can handle. Call us (or any reputable service company) if:
- Equipment is making a new noise (grinding, whining, vibration)
- You see water where it shouldn't be (around the pump, around the light)
- Salt cell isn't producing chlorine despite reading correct salt level
- You can't get chemistry stable after multiple weeks
- Pool surface looks different (staining, etching, calcium scale)
These can usually be resolved cheaply if caught early.
If you're brand new to pool ownership
Travis spends 30 minutes at handover walking through this in detail. You'll also get a written maintenance guide. After the first month, you'll have it down.
If you've got a Wahoo pool and have a maintenance question, ring the office. If you're considering a build, this is the level of detail we go into at handover.
