Pool Covers in Brisbane — Worth It or Skip?
Wahoo Pool & Landscape ConstructionThis is the question every new pool owner asks within the first month: should we get a pool cover?
Like most pool decisions, the answer is 'depends'. Here's the honest breakdown of who benefits, what each type does, and the real costs.
Three types of cover
1. Solar bubble cover (manual)
Cheap blue-bubble plastic sheet that floats on the water surface. The bubbles trap heat and reduce evaporation.
Pros: cheap ($400-$800), genuinely warms the water 2-5°C, reduces evaporation 30-50%.
Cons: requires manual rolling on and off (takes 2 people for larger pools), looks unattractive, doesn't keep large debris out, lifespan 3-5 years.
2. Roller cover (manual or motorised)
Solid material cover on a roller mounted at one end of the pool. Pull it across manually or with a motor.
Pros: more durable ($2,500-$5,500), can be motorised, looks tidier than bubble, keeps debris out, reduces evaporation.
Cons: the roller takes deck space, needs power for motorised versions, may not suit all pool shapes.
3. Automatic safety cover (in-ground tracks)
Solid cover that runs on tracks built into the coping. Operated by switch or remote.
Pros: child-safe (rated to hold a child's weight), looks excellent when closed, blocks 100% of debris and UV, reduces evaporation 90%+.
Cons: expensive ($10,000-$25,000), needs to be designed in at build time (retrofitting is harder), specific to rectangular pools.
What a cover actually does
Three measurable benefits:
1. Reduces evaporation. Brisbane summer evaporation is 8-12mm per day in unprotected pools. A cover cuts this 50-90%. Less water top-up, less salt and chemical dilution.
2. Reduces chemical use. By blocking UV, chlorine breaks down slower. Salt chlorinator works less. Less stabiliser consumption.
3. Reduces heating costs. If you have a heater, a cover retains heat overnight. Heating costs drop 30-50% with regular cover use.
Plus: keeps leaves, dust, and insects out. The cleaner pool needs less filtration time.
What a cover doesn't do
- Doesn't significantly heat the pool in winter (solar covers help in shoulder seasons but not deep winter)
- Doesn't replace pool fence as a safety barrier (except for the rated automatic safety cover)
- Doesn't eliminate maintenance — you still need to test water, clean cartridges, balance chemistry
Who benefits most
Strongly recommended:
- Owners with heating — the cost saving on heating bills typically pays for the cover in 2-3 years
- Owners with overhanging trees — debris problem is significantly reduced
- Owners who travel — covered pool stays clean for weeks
- Spa owners — spas need to stay heated efficiently
Optional:
- Standard family pool with no heating — nice to have but not essential
- Pool used heavily for kids — the cover gets in the way of spontaneous swims
Probably skip:
- Small plunge pools (manual handling outweighs benefits)
- Pools that already stay clean (covered location, no trees)
Brisbane-specific considerations
Three things worth knowing about Brisbane:
1. UV is intense. Covers protect chlorine and stabiliser significantly here.
2. Storm season is dirty. A cover during November-March saves hours of cleanup.
3. Mosquitoes love standing water. A solid cover prevents breeding (relevant for unfilled or rarely-used pools).
Maintenance of the cover itself
- Hose down the cover before each removal/reinstallation
- Don't drag dirty covers across pebble-crete (scratches the surface)
- Store solar bubble covers out of sun when not in use (UV degrades them)
- Lubricate roller mechanism annually
Our standard recommendation
For a typical family pool without heating: skip the cover in year one. Save the money. If you decide later that debris or evaporation is annoying, fit a roller cover. About $3,000 retrofitted, doable any time.
For a pool with heating or a spa: cover at build time. The ROI is real and significant.
For premium luxury builds: automatic safety cover at build time — specify it before quoting.
If you've got a Wahoo pool and you're thinking about adding a cover, give us a ring. If you're considering a build and weighing cover options, we'll quote with and without.
