Long-Term Pool Costs — The First 10 Years of Ownership

Wahoo Pool & Landscape Construction

The build is one cost. Living with the pool is another. Most clients ask about the build price and forget to ask what owning a pool actually costs over the long haul.

Here's an honest decade of ownership in Brisbane based on what our actual customers tell us — averaged across hundreds of pools.

Year 1 — The shakedown year

Costs in year one tend to be slightly higher than steady state because you're learning the rhythm and stocking up on chemicals.

  • Chemicals: $300-$500 (you'll experiment with what works for your water)
  • Electricity (variable-speed pump on standard tariff): $250-$400
  • Water for top-ups: $50-$150
  • Chlorinator cell cleaning supplies: $50

Total year 1: $650-$1,100.

Years 2-5 — Steady state

Once you've found your routine, ongoing costs settle into a predictable range.

  • Chemicals: $250-$400 per year
  • Electricity: $250-$400 per year
  • Water: $50-$100 per year
  • Filter replacement (cartridge): $80-$120 every 18-24 months
  • Salt top-ups: $50-$100 every 12-18 months

Total years 2-5: roughly $700-$1,100 per year.

Year 5-7 — First serviceable items

Most equipment lasts 7-10 years comfortably. Some items start needing service around the 5-7 mark.

  • Salt chlorinator cell replacement (one-off): $400-$700, around year 5-7
  • Pool light bulb (LED) replacement: $100-$200, around year 7
  • Pump bearings serviced or pump impeller (rare): $150-$400

Add roughly $600-$1,500 across years 5-7 on top of the steady-state running costs.

Years 7-10 — Major equipment refresh

Towards the end of the first decade, some equipment is approaching end-of-life. Zodiac warranties on our pumps and filters are 10 years, so most replacements will fall within or just outside warranty.

  • Pump replacement (if not warranty): $1,200-$2,000
  • Filter housing replacement: $400-$700
  • Heater replacement (if you have one): $4,000-$9,000

Possible decade-end equipment refresh: $1,000-$3,000 depending on what's covered by warranty.

Things you might pay for and might not

Pool covers: Optional. Manual roller covers $1,500-$3,000 supplied and installed. Save 30-50% on heating costs and reduce evaporation. Worth it for heated pools, optional for unheated.

Annual pool service: Optional. Some owners pay $400-$800/year for a quarterly professional service (chemistry check, equipment check, basic clean). Most owners we know skip this and self-manage.

Pebble-crete refresh: Premium pebble-crete (what we install) typically lasts 12-15 years before needing refurbishment. Refurb is $5,000-$10,000 when it comes time. Cheaper finishes need this sooner — sometimes 8 years.

Coping or paving repair: Rare on properly installed work. Travertine and bluestone laid well should outlast the pool itself.

Total 10-year cost (typical)

For a family pool used regularly, no heating, self-managed: roughly $8,000-$12,000 over 10 years on top of the build.

That's $80-$120 per month averaged. Less than a Netflix subscription per week, for the privilege of owning a Brisbane backyard pool.

How to keep the costs lower

Three things genuinely matter:

  • Run the variable-speed pump on its lowest practical setting (saves significant electricity)
  • Test water weekly in summer, fortnightly in winter (catch small issues before they need shock dosing)
  • Keep the salt chlorinator cell clean (a five-minute job every 6 months saves replacement)

Travis covers all of this at handover. None of it's complicated.
