Learning how to design outdoor drainage means planning where every part of your backyard sends water before construction starts, not trying to fix it after the lawn, paving and planting are complete.

For Brisbane and South East Queensland homeowners, that planning matters. Intense rainfall, clay soils, established homes and sloping blocks can create conditions where water moves quickly in one area and sits stubbornly in another. A well-designed system protects the usable parts of your outdoor area while helping the landscape look better and last longer.

Start With the Water, Not the Features

It is tempting to begin a backyard design with the pool shape, outdoor kitchen or paving colour. Those decisions matter, but drainage needs to be mapped first. Every roof line, driveway, neighbour's property, garden bed, retaining wall and change in level affects where stormwater will travel.

A proper site assessment identifies high points, low points and the natural fall of the land. It should also consider existing downpipes, legal stormwater discharge points, soil type and any visible signs of past water issues, such as staining on walls, erosion, soggy turf or cracking near hardscape areas.

On a relatively flat block, even a small fall can make the difference between water clearing a paved area and water sitting at the back door. On a sloping block, the challenge is often slowing and directing water before it reaches the lower entertaining area or pool zone. The right answer depends on the block. Simply adding more drains is not always the answer if the surrounding surfaces are still directing water to the wrong place.

Set Finished Levels Before Building

Drainage design is fundamentally about levels. The finished height of the pool, paving, lawn, garden edging and retaining walls needs to work together so water falls away from buildings and does not become trapped.

Paved entertaining areas should generally be graded to shed water rather than hold it. The exact fall will depend on the material, the size of the area and the drainage point, but it must be enough for water to move without making the surface feel noticeably sloped underfoot. Large-format tiles and smooth concrete need especially careful setting out, as standing water is more obvious on these finishes.

Pool surrounds deserve the same attention. Water splashed from the pool is expected, but rainwater should not continually run across coping, collect near fence footings or wash soil and mulch into the pool. Where paving meets a pool, a house or a retaining wall, levels and joints must be detailed carefully to control both surface water and movement over time.

It is also worth planning transitions early. A lawn that sits too high beside a patio can direct water back onto the paving. A garden bed built against a boundary may become a hidden channel. These are small details on a plan, yet they have a major impact once heavy rain arrives.

Choose the Right Type of Outdoor Drainage

Most successful backyards use a combination of surface and subsurface drainage rather than relying on one product or one drain line.

Surface drainage for hard areas

Surface drainage manages water flowing across patios, paths, driveways and pool surrounds. This may include discreet grated channel drains placed along the edge of paving, spoon drains in appropriate locations or carefully graded surfaces that lead water to a collection point.

Channel drains are useful where there is little room to create a natural fall, such as between a paved entertaining area and a retaining wall, or at a garage threshold. They need to be positioned where water naturally arrives. Installing one at random can leave the actual low point untouched.

Grate style is more than an aesthetic choice. It should suit the expected water volume, remain safe underfoot and be practical to clean. Fine grates can look refined around a pool or alfresco, but they may need more frequent clearing if nearby trees drop leaves and debris.

Subsurface drainage for soil and structures

Subsurface drainage deals with water moving through soil. Agricultural drains, drainage cells and gravel-wrapped systems may be used behind retaining walls, beneath garden areas or where groundwater and seepage need to be relieved.

Retaining walls are a common pressure point. Soil behind a wall can become saturated after prolonged rain, adding substantial load and creating pressure that a wall was never intended to hold. Drainage behind the wall, including appropriate backfill and outlet points, is part of the structural solution, not an optional landscaping extra.

Garden beds also need a path for excess water. Plants may enjoy moisture, but constantly saturated roots can damage planting and turn mulch into runoff. The goal is to retain enough water for healthy gardens while preventing overflow towards the home, pool or neighbour's property.

Plan Roof Water Separately, Then Connect the System

Roof water can represent a large volume during a Brisbane storm. Downpipes should not simply discharge beside a new patio, into a garden bed or at the top of a slope. Their water needs a planned route to a suitable legal discharge point, rainwater tank or approved onsite solution where applicable.

This is where a complete backyard plan is valuable. A new pavilion roof, pool house or outdoor kitchen can introduce additional runoff that did not exist when the original house drainage was designed. The drainage system must account for the finished project, not only the existing dwelling.

Local requirements, site conditions and the capacity of existing stormwater infrastructure all need checking before work begins. A qualified contractor can coordinate drainage planning with relevant engineering and approvals where required, particularly when significant earthworks, retaining structures or complex levels are involved.

Design for Pools, Paving and Family Use

A beautiful pool area still needs to work after a storm. Around pools, drainage should be integrated without compromising safety, access or the clean lines of the design. Drain locations should not create trip points, interfere with fence gates or leave grit collecting where children walk barefoot.

Think about how the area will actually be used. An outdoor dining zone may need a dry, comfortable path from the house. A narrow side access can collect roof runoff and become slippery. A turf play area may need gentle shaping so it remains usable rather than turning into a muddy basin.

Materials influence the design too. Permeable surfaces can help reduce runoff in suitable areas, while dense paving and concrete require more deliberate collection and conveyance. Permeable paving is not a substitute for a drainage plan, particularly on reactive or poorly draining soils, but it can be a useful component when installed with the right base preparation.

Avoid the Shortcuts That Create Expensive Repairs

The most common drainage mistakes occur when decisions are made in isolation. A pool builder may set levels without considering the future patio. Paving may be laid before downpipe locations are confirmed. A retaining wall may be built without enough drainage behind it. Fixing these issues later can mean lifting finished surfaces, disturbing gardens and redoing work that should have been coordinated from the beginning.

Be cautious of directing water towards a boundary without understanding where it will go next. Concentrated runoff can affect neighbouring properties, erode soil and create compliance issues. Likewise, do not cover drainage grates with furniture, pots, artificial turf or decorative stones. A drain that cannot receive water or be cleaned will not perform when needed.

Maintenance matters as well. Leaves, mulch, lawn clippings and sediment can block pits and grates over time. Check drainage points before the wet season and after major storms, particularly near trees and garden beds. If water is slow to clear, investigate early rather than waiting for the next severe rainfall event.

Bring Drainage Into the Whole Backyard Design

The best drainage systems are usually the least noticeable because they are built into the overall design. They support the pool, paving, gardens, lighting and outdoor living spaces without becoming the feature. That requires the pool and landscape plan to be considered as one connected project.
